Rita Pankhurst passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 in Addis Abeba

Toronto, Ontario - June 1, 2019 -- Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go to the Pankhurst family and loved ones.

Rita Pankhurst, the 2016 Bikila Award Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a true friend of Ethiopia passed away at the age of 92 and was working on another publication on the history of Ethiopia. Rita’s passing is an enormous loss to all Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia internationally.

Bikila Award stands with the families and friends of the Pankhurst family during this difficult time.

Heartfelt condolences and prayers

Toronto, Ontario - March 10, 2019 -- We are deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash in Bishoftu, Ethiopia today, claiming the lives of all on board. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go to all the families and loved ones of all the victims who perished during this tragedy.

Professor Edemariam Tsega Passed Away

January 4, 2018 -- Professor TSEGA, Edemariam passed away on January 1, 2018, at home, in his 80th year. Born and raised in Gondar, Ethiopia, he was educated at Addis Ababa, McGill and Lund Universities, and the London School of Tropical Medicine.

Remembering a True Friend of Ethiopia – Dr. Richard Pankhurst

February 2017 -- Dr. Richard Pankhurst – the 2016 Bikila Award Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a true friend of Ethiopia passed away on February 16, 2017 at the age 89. We express our deep sympathy to the Pankhurst family and may God rest his soul in peace. Amen!

University of Toronto is now one of the only places in the world where students can learn Ge’ez

Toronto, January 12, 2017 -- Tens of thousands of ancient Ethiopian manuscripts – maybe more – have collected dust for over a century because they are written in what is now a rarely studied language, Ge’ez. 
But a new course at the University of Toronto is teaching a new generation of students to understand the ancient Semitic language so that one day they can access this long-lost trove of knowledge.

The First Bikila Barefoot Challenge was a blast

Toronto, August 12, 2016 -- University of Toronto and Bikila Award hosted the ‘Bikila Barefoot Challenge’ on Saturday August 6, 2016. The family-friendly event was held at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The Bikila Barefoot Challenge is a fundraising initiative in support of the establishment of an Ethiopic Studies program at the University of Toronto and to remember the legacy of our marathon hero Abebe Bikila.

The passing of a pioneer

March 7, 2015 -- Dr. Taffara Degufe, Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation and the first Manager of the State Bank of Ethiopia, passed away on March 6, 2015, at the age of 88 in Vancouver, Canada. See details »
